- CONNECTIX RELEASES MAXIMA SOFTWARE ACCELERATOR
- For PowerBooks, Network Servers, High-RAM desktop systems
-
- SAN JOSE, Calif., USA, May 17, 1994—Connectix Corporation released Maxima 3.0
- at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference today. Maxima 3.0 is the first
- major upgrade to the popular Maxima RAM disk software in two years. Its primary
- new features are double capacity RAM disks and automated setup. Maxima is
- recommended for PowerBooks with 8 MB or more of RAM, all network servers and
- desktop systems with more than 8 MB of RAM. Maxima 3.0 has a suggested list
- price of $99 and registered users of previous versions can obtain an upgrade
- for $19.95 by calling 800/950-5880.
-
- Maxima 3.0 substantially accelerates disk access on the entire range of modern
- Macintosh computers. This software-only product creates a disk drive out of
- standard SIMM RAM. Applications that are normally slowed down by the hard
- drive’s slow mechanical access work at RAM speed with Maxima. Simple read/write
- tests show the RAM disk created by Maxima can be five or more times faster than
- typical hard disks.
-
- All current Macintosh systems can be enhanced by Maxima—from PowerBooks, where
- Maxima also extends battery life, to network servers, where all users on the
- network enjoy faster access times. Maxima is particularly useful to software
- developers on desktop Macs because it dramatically shortens compilation time on
- large programming projects.
-
- NEW AND IMPORTANT FEATURES
- Maxima 3.0 continues to be by far the fastest RAM disk available. In addition,
- Maxima 3.0 now incorporates the proprietary Connectix doubling technology
- originally developed for RAM Doubler to create a RAM disk that is twice the
- size of the SIMM memory allocated. Other features in Maxima 3.0 include:
-
- • A Maxima RAM disk is totally “non-volatile”, meaning the contents are
- preserved through shutdowns, restarts, and even system crashes. The Maxima RAM
- disk appears on the desktop and may be used just like a superfast hard drive.
-
- • All Macintosh models restart faster when the RAM disk has a System Folder on
- it.
-
- • The new installer includes EasySetup™, which automatically creates an
- optimized RAM disk with a customized System Folder and selected applications.
-
- • Maxima 3.0 now works seamlessly with Connectix RAM Doubler. Using both, a Ma
- with 32 MB of RAM can have a 16 MB RAM disk and 48 MB of application space. Now
- that Mac will work significantly faster and open more applications
- simultaneously.
-
- • An improved and simplified user interface, with copy progress indicators whe
- loading and backing up the RAM disk to keep the user fully informed.
-
- • The new Remember mode frees hard disk space and reduces shutdown time.
-
- “Maxima 3.0 takes only a few moments to install, and automatically increases
- your Mac’s performance forever,” explained Roy McDonald, president of
- Connectix. “Maxima and RAM Doubler perfectly illustrate the single passion of
- our utilities division–provide elegant, simple-to-use software to dramatically
- improve how a personal computer works.”
-
- HOW MAXIMA BENEFITS USERS
- On the desktop Macintosh, Maxima makes frequently-used applications or
- documents snap into action at RAM speed. Many common Macintosh products like
- Microsoft Word® load small parts into memory at launch time, leave the
- remainder on the hard disk, and require repeated disk accesses later as the
- application is used. Maxima allows all of the application to be pre-loaded into
- RAM so that, for example, the Word spelling module and dictionary perform at
- RAM speed instead of at hard drive speed. Moreover, when the System Folder is
- on the RAM disk the Mac starts from RAM and all applications work faster every
- time they use system resources, such as when the user is switching fonts or
- finding files.
-
- PowerBook owners create a Maxima RAM disk containing a System, applications,
- and key files to avoid spinning up the hard disk. This dramatically improves
- performance and substantially extends battery life. Unlike the System 7 RAM
- Disk, Maxima automatically configures itself to the optimum configuration for
- the PowerBook, offers RAM compression, and always preserves contents after a
- shutdown, restart or even a system crash.
-
- System administrators use Maxima to increase performance of central databases
- or print spooling on the network. All the users on the network benefit from
- faster access to server resources. And Maxima’s hard drive write-through option
- means changes to the database are instantly backed up for total data base
- integrity.
-
- POWER MACINTOSH SUPPORT
- Maxima 3.0 is the first Connectix product that employs the full power of the
- Power Macintosh in its high-performance “native mode.” Maxima’s time-critical
- sections have all been optimized for Power Macintosh. Maxima comes as a single
- binary so that one version of the product installs on any compatible machine.
- “We are committed to making all our products support the full range of Apple
- Macintosh lineup,” says McDonald. “Even though the Power Macintosh models are
- inherently fast, we intend to create performance enhancements to make them even
- faster.”
-
- Maxima is also compatible with Macs built with the 68030 or 68040 processor, so
- virtually every Mac produced since 1990 can use it. Apple’s new PowerBook
- models, to be introduced later this week, also are supported by Maxima 3.0.
- Owners of older Macintosh models must have a 68030 or 68040 processor or
- accelerator capable of working with virtual memory.
-
- The Maxima 3.0 upgrade is available for $19.95 to registered owners of previous
- versions. List price for the product is $99. Connectix cares works hard to make
- its customers happy: since 1989 the company has provided toll-free technical
- support (800/950-5880), free maintenance upgrades and a complete 30-day
- money-back satisfaction guarantee.
-
- Connectix Corporation designs, manufactures, distributes and publishes
- award-winning personal computer enhancement products. The company’s flagship
- Macintosh products include RAM Doubler, Connectix PowerBook Utilities,
- Connectix Desktop Utilities, Maxima 3.0, MODE32 and the Macintosh Memory Guide.
