  41. For PowerBooks, Network Servers, High-RAM desktop systems

  43. SAN JOSE, Calif., USA, May 17, 1994—Connectix Corporation released Maxima 3.0
  44. at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference today. Maxima 3.0 is the first
  45. major upgrade to the popular Maxima RAM disk software in two years. Its primary
  46. new features are double capacity RAM disks and automated setup. Maxima is
  47. recommended for PowerBooks with 8 MB or more of RAM, all network servers and
  48. desktop systems with more than 8 MB of RAM. Maxima 3.0 has a suggested list
  49. price of $99 and registered users of previous versions can obtain an upgrade
  50. for $19.95 by calling 800/950-5880.

  52. Maxima 3.0 substantially accelerates disk access on the entire range of modern
  53. Macintosh computers. This software-only product creates a disk drive out of
  54. standard SIMM RAM. Applications that are normally slowed down by the hard
  55. drive’s slow mechanical access work at RAM speed with Maxima. Simple read/write
  56. tests show the RAM disk created by Maxima can be five or more times faster than
  57. typical hard disks.

  59. All current Macintosh systems can be enhanced by Maxima—from PowerBooks, where
  60. Maxima also extends battery life, to network servers, where all users on the
  61. network enjoy faster access times. Maxima is particularly useful to software
  62. developers on desktop Macs because it dramatically shortens compilation time on
  63. large programming projects.

  66. Maxima 3.0 continues to be by far the fastest RAM disk available. In addition,
  67. Maxima 3.0 now incorporates the proprietary Connectix doubling technology
  68. originally developed for RAM Doubler to create a RAM disk that is twice the
  69. size of the SIMM memory allocated. Other features in Maxima 3.0 include:

  71. •  A Maxima RAM disk is totally “non-volatile”, meaning the contents are
  72. preserved through shutdowns, restarts, and even system crashes. The Maxima RAM
  73. disk appears on the desktop and may be used just like a superfast hard drive.

  75. •  All Macintosh models restart faster when the RAM disk has a System Folder on
  76. it.

  78. •  The new installer includes EasySetup™, which automatically creates an
  79. optimized RAM disk with a customized System Folder and selected applications.

  81. •  Maxima 3.0 now works seamlessly with Connectix RAM Doubler. Using both, a Ma
  82. with 32 MB of RAM can have a 16 MB RAM disk and 48 MB of application space. Now
  83. that Mac will work significantly faster and open more applications

  86. •  An improved and simplified user interface, with copy progress indicators whe
  87. loading and backing up the RAM disk to keep the user fully informed.

  97. HOW MAXIMA BENEFITS USERS
  98. On the desktop Macintosh, Maxima makes frequently-used applications or
  99. documents snap into action at RAM speed. Many common Macintosh products like
  100. Microsoft Word® load small parts into memory at launch time, leave the
  101. remainder on the hard disk, and require repeated disk accesses later as the
  102. application is used. Maxima allows all of the application to be pre-loaded into
  103. RAM so that, for example, the Word spelling module and dictionary perform at
  104. RAM speed instead of at hard drive speed. Moreover, when the System Folder is
  105. on the RAM disk the Mac starts from RAM and all applications work faster every
  106. time they use system resources, such as when the user is switching fonts or
  107. finding files.

  110. and key files to avoid spinning up the hard disk. This dramatically improves
  111. performance and substantially extends battery life. Unlike the System 7 RAM
  112. Disk, Maxima automatically configures itself to the optimum configuration for
  113. the PowerBook, offers RAM compression, and always preserves contents after a
  114. shutdown, restart or even a system crash.

  126. binary so that one version of the product installs on any compatible machine.

  133. virtually every Mac produced since 1990 can use it. Apple’s new PowerBook
  134. models, to be introduced later this week, also are supported by Maxima 3.0.
  135. Owners of older Macintosh models must have a 68030 or 68040 processor or
  136. accelerator capable of working with virtual memory.
